From April 2014, the planning rules for barn conversions were relaxed to allow them as permitted developments (PD) rather than needing full planning permission (subject to certain caveats). Earlier this year these were then updated to allow for up to five new homes to be created from existing agricultural buildings on a farm rather than the previous maximum of three. This update is timely considering the current shortage of affordable homes to purchase or rent in rural England.
