Salty winds and sweet dreams in Tjörn, Sweden

Westcoast Windows composite aluminium timber windows are designed and manufactured on the west coast of Sweden. Here we’re pleased to share a project from our Swedish colleagues…

In Kårevik, on the southernmost part of Tjörn, Marcus and Helena Wingolf have built their dream house. On a cliff with a mile-wide view of the sea, cobs and skerries sits a villa with space for a relaxed and simple summer life.

Marcus and Helena Wingolf had long considered building a summer house in Kårevik on Tjörn. Marcus grew up in the area and inherited a plot of land several years ago and the decision to build matured over time.

“We live in Stenungsund, so we only have to drive half an hour here by car. Therefore we can come here at weekends and whenever it suits without moving here permanently right now when the children are small”, says Helena.

Building a new house in an ancient archipelago idyll places demands on the design. The goal for Marcus and Helena was to build a house in a modern style that still blends in well with existing buildings.

“We got in touch with architect Pernilla Kindell at Wise Architecture who asked what we were hoping for. We were looking for a house that symbolises the simple life with minimal maintenance. At the same time, it should reflect the sea, sky and peace and quiet”, says Helena.

Marcus and Helena basically bought Pernilla’s proposal straight off; A villa with two parts where the roofs meet in the middle and takes the form of a bird landing on the cliff. The facade is clad with heat-treated pine that will become silver grey over the years and thus blend in even better with the surrounding rock landscape. Together with an aluminum sheet roof, and composite windows and sliding doors from Westcoast Windows, the house is as close to maintenance-free as possible. The contractor who built the house, Json bygg, explored different window solutions and designs from several suppliers.

“We can say that the Westcoast Windows solution, with a solid and stylish construction and exterior of aluminum, suited us best. With the gusty, salty winds it is important to find solutions which will stand the test of time”, Marcus states.

“For us, it has also been important to get help and advice from our suppliers. There we had a very good experience with Westcoast Windows who have been very accommodating and given a good personal service. It is a big investment so you want to make the right decisions” says Helena.

Inside, the house consists of three bedrooms, a sleeping loft, two bathrooms and a large living room and kitchen. From the latter, the family has a wonderful view thanks to the generous windows. Here they look out over the classic white facades of Åstol further down to Carlsten’s fortress.

“There is a kind of calm over the whole area. Not only with the unbeatable view of the sea – we also look down to the bathing area and the old community in Kårevik”, says Marcus Wingolf.
