A 1970S BUNGALOW IS TRANSFORMED INTO A MODERN TWO-STOREY FAMILY HOME WITH COMPOSITE WINDOWS

When the clients moved into their single-storey 1970s bungalow in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, they had plans to renovate it and move on. However 20 year later it is still their home, however unrecognisable from its original appearance.

Following previous attempts to get planning permission to add a second floor in 2004, the couple settled on a side and rear extension instead. However with the need for extra space as their family grew older, more recently they enlisted the help of friend and architect Jane Duncan to deliver the planning permission needed for the extra storey.

The new development has resulted in a contemporary five-bedroomed 290m2 family home, with the project commencing in June 2019 and completing in September 2020.

The development involved not only adding the upper first floor, but also reconfiguring the ground floor to create the spaces needed for their individual family living areas. The new open plan kitchen and living room is brightly lit with natural light from a skylight and Westcoast composite sliding doors for easy access onto their outside space.

The planners stipulated that the original brick should be retained on the ground floor, which keeps the old and new parts of the house distinct. The top-floor windows at the back of the house were kept small for privacy from neighbouring homes.

The 1.5m-wide pivoting front door was supplied by the couple’s own contemporary door company Urban Front, with a layered fumed-oak exterior that echos the profile of the cladding, and a bright yellow interior.

Although the bungalow ground floor retained its original windows, Westcoast Windows supplied the Swedish manufactured triple-glazed 36mm Classic series windows and sliding doors for the new part of the development.

This comprised of our popular tilt and turn windows, top hung projecting windows and sliding doors. The internal wood was finished in contemporary white with the low maintenance aluminium exterior in RAL 7002 Olive Grey to complement the cladding and tie in with the original windows.

The clients are delighted with the results and are enjoying their old bungalow that’s been given a new lease of life! The home was featured in the March issue of Grand Designs magazine.
