composite windows for architect homes

WESTCOAST ENERGY EFFICIENT COMPOSITE WINDOWS FOR AN ARCHITECT’S CONTEMPORARY SELF BUILD HOME IN CORNWALL

With composite windows becoming a popular choice for contemporary self-builds projects in the UK, it was no surprise when an architect specified Westcoast Swedish composite windows for his own home in Cornwall.

The client had always hoped to build his own home, and the opportunity arose when he had the chance to purchase some of the land from his family home.

The two-storey timber-framed house was designed in a cruciform shape, with two rendered wings and two in timber boarding.  The client wanted to achieve a double-height space, without any visible framework, so they installed two huge glulam beans to give the house rigidity without using supporting posts.

Once the structural insulated panel timber frame house was supplied and erected by a local Cornish company and the shell was complete, DSL were able to visit the site to measure up for the composite windows.

The client specified the energy efficient Westcoast Design Series triple-glazed composite windows with the low maintenance aluminium exterior finished in dark grey to complement the natural stone wall bases and slate roof, and the interior left as natural wood to give a warm authentic feel inside.

Once the windows were manufactured and delivered to site, DSL’s skilled fitters were able to install them swiftly to ensure the house was weathertight.

The focal point of the house is the double-height sitting room and balcony atrium with bespoke composite floor-to-ceiling windows to maximise natural light into the open plan living area.  The project uses a range of Westcoast Windows products including bespoke fixed lights, open out side hung windows and open out balcony/terrace doors.

The house is extremely comfortable with low running bills, thanks to the insulation in the timber frame, together with the triple-glazed argon filled windows that ensure even the voluminous double-height spaces remain at a relatively constant temperature and the underfloor heating is rarely needed.
