WESTCOAST SWEDISH COMPOSITE WINDOWS HELP TO TRANSFORM 1960S HOUSE INTO A MODERNIST FAMILY HOME – CASE STUDY
Westcoast authorised distributor, Aluminium Clad Windows, were pleased to supply and install the high performance, energy efficient triple-glazed composite windows for this unique modernist home in the Norfolk countryside.
Milestone House was originally a conventional brick house built in 1968. After considerable consultation, the purchase of additional land and many challenges in the planning application procedure, the owners finally gained approval to build a stylish modernist home fit for their family and lifestyle.
Working with their architect, the Milestone House owners, a film producer/business coach and property consultant, put their experience and creative aptitude to good use in the realisation of their concept. By developing and reconfiguring the existing home, adding a sizeable extension to the main house, plus a two-bedroomed annex, the couple have created a versatile family home that doubles as a work space for them both, and provides an income from holiday rentals.
Nestled into the Norfolk countryside, Milestone House stands proud in cedar cladding and graphite render, complimented by the stylish, low maintenance, aluminium exterior of the composite windows finished in RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey (30% gloss).
Milestone House benefits from extensive natural light, provided by the large glazing areas of Westcoast Design Series, triple-glazed composite windows and sliding doors.
The home is sympathetically designed with a focus on natural materials, taking inspiration from Scandinavian design and Modernism, whilst respecting the 1960s heritage of the original house.
Light, bright walls in the reception rooms are complemented by wooden floors, deep timber window reveals and the warm wood finish of the composite windows.
The open-plan kitchen and dining space benefits from two sets of expansive Westcoast lift and slide, composite sliding doors that lead out to a decked courtyard.
Following through the richly decorated hall, on the ground floor there is a guest bedroom and a cosy living space with views onto the garden through large windows. A few steps lead down into a multi-purpose room for dining, games or simply relaxing. This room at the end of the house benefits from a wall of glazing adjacent to a set of Westcoast lift and slide, composite sliding doors lending natural light and easy access to the outdoor space.
Moving up the bespoke modern staircase, with natural light provided by a huge picture window onto the frontage, leads to further family bedrooms and bathrooms. At the end of the landing, down a few steps leads into the spacious and bright master bedroom with vaulted ceiling and large glazing at a low level, allowing countryside views from the bed.
The holiday home annex features beech-clad walls, timber floors and soft hues to provide a warm and inviting retreat. The open-plan kitchen, dining and living room leads out through Westcoast lift and slide composite sliding doors to the delightful naturalistic garden and countryside beyond.
Westcoast Design 48mm triple-glazed composite windows are ideal for contemporary homes, with a deeper glass unit for maximum light, a flush finish and simple, elegant lines.
The larger glass cavity increases the window’s thermal performance, giving you a U-value of 1.0 W/m2k for opening and 0.9 W/m2k for fixed windows.
The house and annex are fitted with 4 large sets of Westcoast lift & slide composite sliding doors (SDA) which allow easy access to the outside spaces. Other products used are the popular top hung reversible window (TSG180), fixed lights (FKG) and the single terrace/patio door (FDG) with timber threshold.
The composite window installation achieves U-values as low as 0.96 W/m2k including the window construction.
