Whether your project has a contemporary or traditional style, glazing bars can change the character of your windows and doors without having to sacrifice function or performance.
You may wish to match other windows in your home to maintain a consistency of style or it may be a requirement of the planning department if your home is a listed property or in a conservation area. Alternatively you may be looking to achieve a certain look, like the Swedish home shown right – a beach front property in the traditional Scandinavian style.
Whatever your style, it’s important to understand the difference between a true composite glazing bars, bonded or duplex glazing bars, integral glazing bars and clip-on surface mounted glazing bars. Your decision can be made when considering aesthetics, budget and ease of use/cleaning.
TYPES OF GLAZING BARS
A: TRUE COMPOSITE GLAZING BAR
True composite glazing bars divide multiple panes within a single sash, with finished timber internally and aluminium externally to match your windows, jointed into sash members.
B: BONDED (OR DUPLEX) GLAZING BAR TO SEALED UNITS
Bonded or duplex glazing bars combine a 34mm wide aluminium exterior with a 34mm wide timber interior, secured to the glass with an additional sealed unit spacer bar in-between which gives the appearance of divided panes. The exterior aluminium is powder coated in any of our RAL colour finishes to match the window.
C: INTEGRAL GLAZING BAR
A simple and cost effective solution where the integral glazing bar is completely encapsulated in the glass cavity – ideal for ease of cleaning the internal and external window surface. Available in a range of colours to match the frame and sash.
D: CLIP-ON EXTERNAL GLAZING BAR
Surface mounted glazing bars are mounted to the outside of the glass providing the illusion of dividing large glazed areas. The external aluminium is offset from the glass unit to let the water run down and they can be unclipped for glass cleaning. A cost effective solution with no effect on overall U-value. It can be finished in any of our colour finishes to match the window.

GLAZING BAR DESIGNS
From a design perspective you can adapt glass dividing glazing bars to suit your style, whether you require large expanses of glass or smaller individual panels.
Transoms (horizontal) and mullions (vertical) divide the frame into several opening lights or a combination of opening and fixed lights within the same frame. These can be combined with glass dividing glazing bars to create even more configurations.
