WESTCOAST SWEDISH COMPOSITE WINDOWS FOR THE REDEVELOPMENT OF A COMMERCIAL BUILDING INTO RESIDENTIAL HOMES
Westcoast distributor partner Avista Window Systems won the contract to supply and install the windows and doors for the redevelopment of the old Passport Office, Olympia House, in Newport.
Built in the 1960s, Olympia House is a 90,000 sq ft nine-storey property redeveloped into 62 residential units for private rental, with shops and restaurants on the lower levels. As one of the largest buildings in Newport, the redevelopment of Olympia House will support the regeneration of the city, helping to bring residents back into the centre creating improved vibrancy and a greater sense of community.
Avista Window Systems worked with developer RH Properties to deliver the window solutions for this project.
Approximately 1,200m2 of Westcoast Classic Series double-glazed windows were specified for this project, primarily the TSG180 and FKG, along with large FKG fixed light stair core screens. The popular TSG180 top hung reversible window is ideal for multi-storey buildings where cleaning and maintenance can be carried out from the inside. FDGD Open Out Terrace Doors were fitted to the top level apartments and the bottom floor apartments were fitted with BHG bottom hung windows with Automatic Opening Vents (AOV).
Westcoast composite windows benefit from a warm wood interior that was finished in a clear lacquer. Externally the architects specified a different RAL colour finish for every floor, which certainly creates a striking contemporary design.
Avista Window Systems also provided the shopfronts and the automatic entrance doors on the Ground level of the development.
Richard Pretty – Site Manager (RH Properties) comments:
“Working with Avista was a pleasurable and stress free experience for us. They worked in harmony with us from step 1 of the project to completion, site surveying, corresponding with the architects when required, ordering, removing the existing windows and finally installing the new. Prior to starting the project Avista attended site and surveyed thoroughly the 8 story building in its entirety, produced schedules and specifications and quickly got the windows into fabrication to meet our tight programme. Deliveries were scheduled to suit our programme and arrived on time each and every time. Installation was completed ahead of schedule and any queries we had on site were dealt with quickly and efficiently to our satisfaction and we very much look forward to working with Avista again”.
