THE NEW PRODUCTION HUB AT GLYNDEBOURNE OPERA HOUSE WAS INSTALLED WITH WESTCOAST SWEDISH COMPOSITE WINDOWS
The new production hub is Glyndebourne’s biggest capital development since the rebuilding of the opera house in 1994.
The project has created an excellent environment for their teams of prop, scenery and costume makers, and accommodates a technical workspace, rehearsal space and new music practice rooms.
Designed by Nicholas Hare Architects, the building houses a double-height assembly workshop in the centre, with the other spaces around it.
The props and carpentry departments are homed on the ground floor with the costume department and rehearsal room above.
These are separated from the central space by glazing, offering an ideal route for visitors’ tours to look down into the props and carpentry workshops and into the costume department.
The tea-room on the first floor has a large window facing towards the theatre and landscape beyond.
The building design and choice of composite windows help to uphold Glyndebourne’s high environmental credentials and achieve an ‘Excellent’ BREEAM rating.
Working with contractors Sunninghill, Westcoast Windows specified Classic Series composite windows in side hung open in casements behind external timber louvres combined with fixed lights.
The stylish low maintenance aluminium exterior is finished in dark grey RAL 7012 to complement the dark-stained timber cladding. The warm wood interior is finished in lacquered redwood to contrast with the contemporary internal styling.
